The outdoor season in Connecticut always begins with the John K. Lee Junior/Senior team match. Following past history, this tournament introduces “new” shooters to the more advanced “techniques” of firing outdoors vs. indoors by having to deal with tricky wind, light, and mirage conditions. In order to help cope with the nuances, junior shooters are paired with more “seasoned” senior masters for training purposes. This particular Saturday morning (5/14/2016) proved to be cold and windy (the summer weather had not yet arrived in this New England state), so competitors knew a win would be earned by the team on the line best able to read the wind conditions and have a little luck.

When the scores were posted, last year’s senior winner Leonard Remaly brought junior teammate Tucker Fowler up to the podium to capture the coveted winning trophies with bronze busts of John K Lee anchored atop wood bases. Their team score of 1575 was compiled from Len’s 785 and Tucker’s 790 (the 2nd highest individual score of the day). 2nd Place Team went to Gillian Riordan and Megan Wilcoxson. Both girls posted 786’s for a team score of 1572. Gillian’s score was two x’s higher then Megan, fitting since she was pulled into the “senior” role as the match was short a few seniors. 3rd place fell to another “double” junior team of “senior” Scott Condo (790) and Sydney Hawke (762) for a total of 1552. It was Sydney’s first outdoor match but veteran junior shooter Condo coached her to post scores of 191 and 190 at both 50- and 100-yards. Talk about consistency!

Following the Lewis Class system, every 5th place team was awarded John K Lee Double medals. 5th Place team was the Francis Conlon (790) and Dan Wesson (758) duo; team score of 1548.

The next morning, Sunday, May 15, the sun finally rose over the 100-yard targets and spread some warmth on the firing line. The wind remained relentless, though, and each competitor had to remain sharp and attune to the change in wind direction and velocity. Expert Scott Condo proved to be the master of iron sights as he posted the Match Winner score in both the 50 yard and 50 meter match with scores of 398 and 396, respectively; and Match Winner Iron Sight Aggregate score of 794. Dominating the any sights matches was Kaitlyn Kutz, posting a 397 in the Dewar, 394 at 100 Yard, and 791 Any Sight Aggregate matches. At the end of the day, both Scott and Kaitlyn were tied, but a final check proved that Kaitlyn posted just one “x” better so Scott settled for 2nd overall as High Junior. Megan Wilcoxson fired a 1576 for the 3rd highest score and High Woman. Other individual places were: Dylan Lorence – 1563-52x – 1st Master/Expert; Tucker Fowler – 1559-66x – 2nd Master/Expert; Jacob Lagace – 1571-65x – 1st Sharpshooter; Kyle Kutz – 1558058x – High Sub Junior; Stephanie Allan – 1545-50x – 1st Marksman; and Kevin Collins – 1534-52x – 2nd Marksman.
