Kaitlyn Kutz, Connecticut’s female state qualifier in the local Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (JOSC), demonstrated that she has been practicing hard for the upcoming national JOSC (NJOSC) by posting a 562 in the recent NRA National Junior Indoor Metric Position Sectional for the individual Gold Sectional Medal. This match utilizes the same USA Shooting target that all shooters will fire on at the NJOSC at Colorado Springs, CO, in April. Firing a 554 was senior Xavier High School falconer Dylan Lorence for the Silver. The Bronze medal was captured by Scott Condo from Vinal Tech School with a 553 (Connecticut’s male state qualifier for the NJOSC). It’s great to see these athletes at the top of the leader board as it proves that they are sticking to a diligent training schedule.

The Junior category was dominated by Suffield Academy (SA) teammates, seven-year consecutive high school state champions. Leading the SA group was Senior Captain Aya Ishikawa (photo on right) with a personal best score of 536, Megan Williams – 3rd (523), Chris Choi 4th (521), and Susan Le – 5th (517). Another Colorado-bound Connecticut qualifier, Tyler Glynn from Montville High school, was 2nd place Junior with a score of 532.
The Intermediate Junior (IJ) group was led by Michael Acampora, a freshman at Xavier High School with a score of 548. Michael also received an invitation to the NJOSC but is remaining home this year to concentrate on his first year’s studies at Xavier High School (kudos to Mike for being a diligent student!). Five points behind for 2nd Place IJ was Bunnell High School’s Hope Kavulich. Firing 538’s were Stratford PAL’s Megan Wilcoxson (3rd with 11 x’s) and Cos Cob’s Stephanie Allen (4th with 8 x’s). Landing 5th was Sandy Hook’s Ryan Horn with a 536.
The team match was won by Xavier High School “Gold”, consisting of Dylan Lorence, Michael Acampora, Jacob Lagace & Kyle Gardiner (2139). They each receive an NRA Gold Sectional medal. The 1st Scholastic Team was easily won by the Suffield Academy’s “Siberian Tigers”, comprised of Aya Ishikawa, Meg Williams, Chris Choi, and Jake Mnich with their score of 2097, 42 points ahead of the 2nd scholastic team, Vinal Tech.
