Held on January 24 & 25, 2015 –
Winter Storm Juno might have disrupted transportation and resulted in six states declaring snow emergencies across the New England states, but it didn’t prevent Connecticut sharpshooters from competing in the NRA Smallbore Rifle Open Sectional on January 24 & 25, 2015, sponsored by Blue Trail Range. Rather a “hotly-contested” match ensued between two local high school students, Eric Sloan and Michael Acampora. Prone Match Winner Oakdale resident, Eric, established a 7-point lead over Mike in the first match of the weekend; but, when it came to standing, the Xavier freshman proved he had nerves of steel and the lead to a tie with his Match Winner score of 369 to Eric’s 1st Sharpshooter score of 362. When it came to kneeling, however, Eric’s veteran status of a senior with a few more years of experience in the sport over a freshman, claimed victory by posting a 373 to Michael’s 369, resulting in an aggregate score of 1130 to 1126. Kaitlyn Kutz, hailing from the Cos Cob Rifle & Revolver Club, earned 3rd place overall with her fine score of 1089, also capturing 1st Marksman laurels in the standing and kneeling positions as well as the aggregate. Dylan Lorence took High Marksman in the Prone Match with a score of 391. Firing the 4th highest aggregate score of 1086 was Cos Cob teammate, Sydney Katz. Her final score garnered her 1st Place combined Master/Expert class in the aggregate, standing, and kneeling positions. Finally, proving her prone prowess for the 2nd match of the month was Emma Acampora, firing a 380-14x to Sydney’s 380-6x for the 1st Place Master/Expert Prone title.
